Tiana Wilson
Student Council President
It is insane how time is going. Who would’ve thought my time at Mount Alvernia would come to an end soon? My name is Tiana Wilson and I have been attending Mount Alvernia for seven years. It has been a challenging but spectacular seven years, and I wouldn’t think of spending my high school experience elsewhere. I graduated in 2019, and decided to further my studies at sixth form and I am currently in grade 13.
Being the president wasn’t and still isn’t an easy task, but it has taught me so much. It helped me to get over being shy and it also helped me to communicate better, since that is one of the main roles of the president. A student counsellor provides guidance, listens to their concerns and helps them make healthy decisions. Their role also includes dealing with a range of issues and challenges, and they provide an environment that is safe for students to talk about their problems and come up with solutions.
My position has created bonds between me and my schoolmates, and they are comfortable speaking to me about personal situations. This has also helped me to apply advice I gave them to my own situation. I was really nervous when I was selected, but now I really love being the president, as I was exposed to a lot of situations that placed me in a position to think and act. This position also helped me to continue to remain humble because I was always being watched, and people looked up to me.
My inspiration would have to be no other than Mrs. Stacey Reynolds. Despite her not being the principal anymore, that did not stop her from checking up on me and encouraging me. While she was at Mount Alvernia, I would admire how dedicated she was to situating Mount Alvernia at the top, and she did not rest until we were there. She made us her number one priority, and she was always open to talk and also for constructive criticism. She built bonds with us which made us feel comfortable to go to her about anything. Although she is no longer with us physically, I know her heart is still with us.
My motto is YOU DIDN’T COME THIS FAR TO ONLY COME THIS FAR. It helped me to push myself as this means that I have achieved a lot and I have the potential to achieve more. I use this to motivate myself that I didn’t come this far to fail or to quit but I came this far to be successful and that is the aim.
