Kayon Whyne

Principal

M.Ed., B.A (Hons) Dip.Ed.

Welcome to Mount Alvernia High School, home of the stellar ladies! I am Kayon Whyne, proud principal of this amazing school.

Kayon Whyne was born in the parish of Kingston, Jamaica and at the age of three, she moved to Portmore, St. Catherine, where she grew up. She is a Roman Catholic and a firm believer in her faith. She has one child but is mother to many. She is married to Daniel and serves as a motivation for many in her community and within her work life. She currently worships at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.

A graduate of St. Mary’s University and London Metropolitan University, Mrs. Whyne also has additional graduate qualification from the Mico Teacher’s College in Guidance and Counselling and National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL). She is a proud past student of St. Catherine High School. A trained guidance counsellor, she has worked at the Hampton School for Girls, Cavaliers All-Age, Boundbrook Primary and Bridgeport High School. In this role, she disseminated scholarship information, supplied school-to-career guidance and interpreted standardized test scores, and planned and organized college tours locally and internationally.

At Hampton High School, she co-organized personal development seminars and workshops for teachers and parents, and mentored many students through various co-curricular activities. She was the Principal at Rose Hall Primary and Infant School in St. Elizabeth between September 2017 and January 2021.

She also ventured in the field of social work, both in Jamaica and England for more than a decade, and gained valuable experience in the field of social care for both adults and children. After being overseas, she realized a greater capacity to demonstrate her purpose in her beloved nation. Twelve years ago, she returned to Jamaica and started a new chapter in shaping the lives of students. Since then, she has successfully worked in the area of education, and is a firm believer that it is the duty of a teacher to enhance teaching, learning and the social scope of students.

A service and community-minded individual, Kayon Whyne has served and continues to serve on national boards. Mrs. Whyne is a strong believer in school spirit, and is convinced that through strategic partnerships and continuous training, any school can achieve constant improvement. The core values of Mount Alvernia High School, she believes, set an excellent stage for constant upward movement. She continues to be excited by the possibilities for education in Jamaica, which she believes is on an upward trajectory. She believes that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic will only serve to fuel more significant and needed changes in education.

As the very proud Principal of this academically selective state high school with a well-respected history of providing exceptional educational outcomes and opportunities for gifted and talented young women since 1925, I warmly welcome you to the website of Mount Alvernia High School.
